mxl progress

not much.
however, i have century grey centaur crankset , front derailleur and brakes on their way.

for decals (i say decals, but they'll be painted on) i'm almost locked in on the current model's design below, but i'm still undecided on colour.

my heads saying 'oh, just go saronni, coz it'll sell easily if you want to sell it'
my hearts saying 'dude, you really want to paint it for the next owner??'

so far the shortlist is dark metallic purple, dark metallic green, or silver.
maybe century grey..

either way, i'm keen on century grey centaur drivetrain, chrome forks, lugs and stays.
rims will probably be dark grey or maybe silver. hubs are low flange, polished 32h daytonas. 3x lacing.

new bike

no pics yet, as it needs bartape and tyres before i can post images.
another colnago. this one won't be sold.

ok, heres a pic of it in the old owners laundry. swapped for $1050 worth of painting work.

'99 (i think) master extra light with carbon flash fork, running 9sp veloce and scirocco g3s

things it needs:
tyres - mismatched, not holding air, cactus. $100 (michelin speedium2 -basic black tyres - $16 each)
bartape - falling off. $30 (black ambrosio handlebar ribbon -$20)
rh lever hood - looks like a dog ate it. $50 (pair) ($33 on ebay)

things i want for it
chrome fork - $150?
headset - polished - $90
seatpost - campy non-aero (centaur etc) $100
s'post binder bolt - campy $20
32h eyeletted silver box section rims on my daytona hubs $200-$300
new paint - $700?
either bare chrome or colour by joe cosgrove.
i think i want these decals, on saronni red with chrome stays and headtube lugs.

Europa

The Europa. i'm 90% sold on the idea of fitting this out with the 600ex parts i have left. the only thing holding me back is deciding on the colour. im leaning towards baby blue:

rogerrabbits falcon san remo
my $20 tecnotrat oria europa

any other ideas for colour? it will have chrome forks, non-aero levers with tan hoods, gumwalls and hihg flange hubs. oh, and it has to be a solid colour - no metallics.

bad luck

wednesday afternoon, i'm finishing work and putting my sign away:

and i leave my van running and think to myself 'hmm, sounds a bit rattly - must remember to check oil when i get home', and promptly forget about it. van's running fine, not heating up or anything.

this morning i jump in the van, back it out the drive and put it in first. fuh-fuh-fuh-fuh-fuh, and it loses power, no revs. put the clutch in, give it a rev, kinda comes back. let the clutch out and it stalls. back it down and park it on the wrong side of the street and call racq. figure its an electrical problem. mr racq comes and says 'uh, mate- that timing belts rooted. shut her off and i'll call you a towtruck'

what sucks the most at this stage is the fact that i had the timing belt and tensioner (and water pump) done 4 months and 4 thousand km ago. getting pretty wound up about this stage. :(

talk to the mechanic and its not the timing belt. its the crank. arrrrgh! apparently the keyway on the end of the crank (for the crank pulley) is worn, and while the cranks turning, nothing else is. so i've got bent valves and a knackered crank. second hand engine getting reconditioned - looking at about $3500 incl. labour to get my jigger back on the road. at least i'll have a nice new engine.

6400 shifters

found some more 6400 dual control levers for the cfr1 on ebay. woo woo!

SHIMANO 600 LEVERS

SOME MARKS 8 SPEED ONE WORKS 2 SPEED ONE NEEDS FIXING
$30. BUY IT NOW
half a can of degreaser ($2.95 a can) and it's as free as a bird.
so this weekend, new cables and bartape.

errands bike

so.. not the best frame for the style i have in mind, but it'll do for now.

the first thing to lock in is the bars. to me, bars determine the whole feel of the bike. it is currently fitted with cinelli 66-40 drop bars with campag victory/triomph brake levers. until i lock in bars, i can't lock in controls either (sti, downtube, aero, non-aero, barcons, thumbies) all these choices.. while i think about bars, what can i lock in?

BRAKES: no canti bosses, so centrepull, single- or dual-pivot brakes are required. dual-pivot, thanks. i'll be carrying gear on the bike, so brakes need to be as good as they can be.
i have some silver shimano rsx dual-pivot brakes - a polish and some new pads and they'll be perfect for the job.

GEARING: 7 speed cassette with 13-15-17-19-21-23-26 sprockets, and 39-53 chainrings gives me roughly 40 gear inches to 110 gear inches. surely that's enough. if not, a 36-50 compact crankset will work nicely with that cassette too.

WHEELSET: eventually, i can see myself fitting a dynamo hub, but for now, it will run its current wheelset - silver velocity deep v rims with exage hubs.

Stay tuned for more drivel..

ramblings

so.. i have a few old bikes:

i also have a couple of other framesets not pictured, but those are to be sold/gifted.

i also have a few spare parts such as the previously mentioned 7400 bits, and some new 600ex arabesque components, which i will add to as i find them. i also have boxes of stuff like seatposts, saddles, spare derailleurs etc.

the plan is to consolidate a bit. ideally, i want an errands bike and a latte bike. oh, and maybe a cyclocross/dirt roader.

errands: ride to the shops for bread and milk - something i can ride/park in the rain and not get emotional about.
latte: something for myself, and others, to admire. you know the type. polish, clean, wax, detail? sure! ride? not so much..

i really want to keep the blue and white superlite and build it up as a period (c.1989) road bike. when i was a kid in high school, this was the coolest bike i knew of - i didn't know much about bikes.
if i build this up it will have better than standard components, but i won't be getting weenie about it. i have a spare set of 7400 derailleurs and downtube shifters..
yeah, 7speed dura ace derailleurs and shift levers, a polished 105 crankset, some 600 brake levers and silver velocity aeroheads. coffee time!

the '89 europa is fairly generic, and certainly needs repainting. no eyelets for fenders, so this one will either be singlespeed, or.. or, something else. i really don't know what to do with this one yet.. maybe if i can find some adaptors for the arabesque shifters, i could make a bit of a vintage look? must try 35c tyres for clearance. potential cx machine awaits.

the '92 lemond. this is the nicest frame i currently have. this one should get a nice paintjob and a campy drivetrain. keep saving. i have those blue ambrosio excellence wheels on daytona hubs doing nothing.. latte bike in the making.

the '94 cfr1 has full 600ultegra groupset, excluding seatpost and pedals. i've considered making this single-speed and putting the 600 gear on something else, like the europa. i like the drivetrain, but i think once i've built up the dura-ace drivetrain, it might not be so nice. i should just sell it. $400 ono

the last one is another repco, a '94 olympic 14. tig welded cromo main tubes. pretty average frame, but it fits nicely. also has eyelets. maybe this is my errands bike. currently fitted out with a mish-mash of gear. deep v's, shimano drivetrain, campy brakeset.

now, where to start?

happy snap

broken 7400 shifters

so i got those 7400 shifters for a song, owing to the fact that they didn't change down reliably.
half a can of wd40 and they feel much nicer.
However... one of the white washers on the

cable hook unit (part number Y-6BD98110)
is missing. i have 2 new units on the way.
incidentally they use that part in their 6400/7400/6500/7700/7800 dual control levers as far as i can tell.

7400 shifters

i've just picked up some 7400 shifters :D

these will eventually go on my lemond ventoux.

still looking for some 6400 shifters for the cfr-1
